Case Study: bespoke e-learning courseware and accessibility standards / diversity and equal opportunity training

Background

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is the government department which promotes UK business at home and abroad.

To meet the government's agenda for modernising its ministries, the Department wanted to train over 10,000 staff in new policies and legislation regarding cultural diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace.

To do this, they decided to commission an e-learning solution which would need to explain to DTI staff how to actively recognise and capitalise on diversity. The solution needed to be fully accessible for all.

The DTI commissioned the PTSC (Personnel Training Services Consortium) to develop an e-learning programme for delivery via the DTI intranet. To develop the programme, the PTSC commissioned one of its members, KnowledgePool eLearning, a company with over 40 years' experience of providing enterprise-wide learning solutions .

E-learning solution

KnowledgePool built an e-learning intranet programme for the DTI. It sets out the differences between equal opportunities and diversity, gives an overview of the new legislation affecting public authorities and shows how harnessing diversity brings innovation and versatility to the workplace.

The intranet portal was also designed to be fully compliant with new accessibility standards to ensure people with disabilities are able to access, learn from and enjoy the diversity course.

Results

All DTI staff have access to KnowledgePool's solution via the Department's intranet. The interactive diversity course sets out the aims and objectives of diversity policies, explains the relevant equal opportunities legislation and offers advice to DTI staff.

Now people with disabilities are able to access, learn and enjoy the course and more then 10,000 DTI employees are able to recognise and capitalise on diversity.

Mark Dean, Director of PTSC, said: 'The Government wants its policies to be relevant to the lives that people live today.

'Everyone at DTI who is responsible for developing or managing policy; carrying out a function or providing a service must be aware of diversity issues and be proactive in bringing them into their daily work.'
