E-Learning: Theory and Practice

This course covers the learning theories appropriate for e-learning, and describes how they are implemented in the design of e-learning systems. It also covers the components of e-learning, its history and benefits. Finally, the course will compare e-learning to instructor led training, and discuss the most important industry trends.

The course will run from January 11th to March 15th, and will comprise a two hour seminar per week (on Wednesdays,16:00 - 18:00). The seminar will be a lively mix of learning activities, including presentations, discussion of readings, critiques of existing systems, and design activities.

The course assessment will take the form of a portfolio which includes a critique of an existing e-learning system and plans for its redesign, based on the participant's understanding of e-learning theory and practice. Whenever possible, the portfolio will tie directly into the participant's industrial experience.

Technology for E-learning Designers

This course provides an overview of the broad range of technologies and standards which exist to support e-learning. Participants will learn to select the most appropriate technologies and standards for a given e-learning scenario, and will gain a basic proficiency in a relevant subset of technologies.

The course will run from April 19th to June 21st, and will comprise a two hour seminar per week (on Wednesdays,16:00 - 18:00). The seminar will be a lively mix of learning activities, including presentations, discussion of readings, hands-on practical exercises, and design and implementation activities.

The course assessment will involve the production of an e-learning artefact, developed using an assortment of tools, written to appropriate standards (e.g. as a learning object), integrated with a learning management system. A reflective commentary, covering issues such as the development process, tool selection, issues and problems encountered, etc., will also be produced. Whenever possible, the portfolio will tie directly into the participant's industrial experience.
